Payment Gateway Integration

Payment Gateway refers to an electronic commerce service that authorizes payments for e-business and online retailers. In a way, represents a physical POS (Point of sale) terminal located in most retail outlets. Payment gateways encrypt sensitive information such as credit card numbers to ensure that information passes securely between the customer and the merchant.

Working of Payment Gateway

Although it may sound simple but in reality the work of a payment gateway is composed of several complex steps, a statement of what follows: -

  • Check the order on the website and sent to the merchant's web server in encrypted form. This is usually done via SSL (Secure Socket Layer) encryption.
  • The transaction details are sent to the payment gateway in question.
  • The transaction information is then transmitted to the merchants acquiring bank's payment gateway.
  • Merchants acquiring bank forwards the transaction information to the issuing bank (which issued the credit card to the customer).
  • Then the credit card issuer sends a response to the payment gateway. The response includes information that if payment has been approved or rejected. In the case of the decline of reason is also sent in response.
  • The response is then sent to the Payment Gateway to the merchant server.
  • At merchants server the response is encrypted again and transferred to the customer. This allows the customer to know that if the order has been successful or not.
  • The whole process usually takes less than 5 seconds. At the end of business day (or settlement period) the acquiring bank (or card issuing bank) deposits the total of approved funds in the nominated account of the merchant.
